How it all began, up to the first week of surgery.

Kyler made 1st cuts on the highschool. Today they had tryouts out again for everyone that made 1st cuts. About a half hr before tryouts were over, I recieved a call from the athletic trainer saying I needed to come pick kyler up. He heard a pop and then fell to the floor holding his knee. The athletic trainer thought he had torn his ACL. His knee was swollen and sore, so he iced it and used crutches until we were able to get him in to the doctor for an MRI.

Monday, Nov. 12th
We were able to get him in to the doctor. They took an xray and then the doctor came in to look at it. From looking at the xray he said it looked like his knee cap popped out of place and broke a piece of bone off. He said that it looked like he tore a ligament as well, but needed an MRI to confirm everything.  Unfortunately, we had to schedule another appointment for an MRI and then wait a few days to know the results. Luckily, he was able to come in the next day for the MRI.

They were able to get him in yesterday for the MRI, but said the doctor was out of the office on Friday, so we had to wait until Monday to know the results. I called and said we wanted to know the reults sooner and asked if there was any way they could. The lady said she could maybe get us in at 1 but that would be pushing it. At noon she called and said they put a rush on it and we could come in. The MRI confirmed what the doctor said on Monday. He said his ACL and everything else looked good, but he would need surgery. They were able to get us scheduled for Tuesday Nov. 20th, right before Thanksgiving. They gave us a brace and told us to bring it to his surgery and went over all the instructions. Kyler was anxious to get it done, but I dont think he expected what was about to come....

Saturday, Nov 17th
My sister and her husband came over, as well as our good friends and gave Kyler a blessing.

Tuesday, Nov. 20th....Day of surgery!
His surgery was scheduled for 11:45, we had to be there at 10:15. I think I was more nervous then he was. They called him back and took all his vitals. The nurse had to shave his knee. She kept saying I dont know why I even have to shave this, there is just peach fuzz, but the boss said to. Once they shaved his knee they put him on a sedative so they could give him a shot in his leg to numb it. This was suppose to help with the pain right after surgery until the block wore off. After this Tyson and I had to go back to the waiting room. I tried not to cry, its hard seeing your kid get wheeled away from you. About 3 hours later the doctor came out to talk to us and showed us some pics. He said everything went well and we could go back and see him in about 20 minutes. Back to the waiting room we went. Then they came and got us. He was still trying to wake up. We were there about another hour, the nurse explained how to care for the stitches and how to use the ice machine they were sending us home with. Then we helped him get dressed and they got him in a wheelchair and wheeled him to the car. Now the journey begins...

When we got home Tyson had to carry him down the stairs and into the recliner.  He had to have his leg locked straight in the brace for a week,  keep it elevated and keep the ice on at all times.  The first 2 days were not too bad, his leg was still numb so he didn't have much pain. He slept in the recliner and I slept on the couch in case he needed to go to the bathroom or needed anything.  Everytime he has to go to the bathroom we have to help him get out of the chair.  We hold his leg up,  unhook the ice,  and then he drops the leg rest and the recliner and uses his crutches to help him.  We had to walk right behind him and hold onto his sides as he walked into the bathroom and went.  He would always say how awkward and hard it was trying to go with someone standing behind him.  Then we helped him walk back,  sit in the chair, prop his leg up, check tti make sure the machine still had ice and then him it back up.  This became the routine.

Wednesday, Nov. 21st
He had quite a few visitors come and bring things for him.

Thursday, Nov. 22nd
Today the block they gave him in his leg was starting to wear off.  He was taking loretab every 4 hours,  sometimes at night he could go 6 hours.  My aunt has these healing light pads that are red uv lights. She said it would help with the pain and healing if we wanted to borrow them, so she brought them up.  We were planning on going to Tyson's  parents for Thanksgiving, but there was no way that was going to happen. Thankfully, they came and brought us Thanksgiving dinner. Tyson and I were still sleeping out in the living room by him in case he needed anything. Getting sleep was tough, but we were getting by.

Friday, Nov. 23
We were able to undo his brace and take all the gauze and dressing off his knee and put waterproof bandaids on.  We put the brace back on and tried tightening it but he would say it's too tight, so we loosened it a little.  He got up to use the bathroom and started crying and could hardly walk. We had to find out the hard way,  it's actually better for the brace to be tighter. His knee didnt have enough support so we had to tighten them and it made it much better. Today was rough though, he kept experiencing hot, burning pain on his knee. He was in tears every couple hours. Sometimes we had to give him the pain med a little bit early just so he didn't have to suffer so much. He would wear the lights my aunt brought over and said those actually seemed to help. He is finally able to walk to the bathroom and go on his own, but still needs help getting in and out of the chair.

Sunday, Nov. 25th
My mom had thanksgiving at her house yesterday. Kyler was bummed that he still couldn't get up to do anything.  He wore the healing lights for about 3 hours today.  We saw so much progress after that. He has not had any pain meds since Friday. The pain had been a lot less and he wants to try and shower.  He uses his arms to hoist himself up backwards on each stair, while I hold his leg straight out. Once he gets to the bathroom we were going to take off his brace and have him sit on a stool in the tub and just leave his leg straight out in the bottom of the tub, but he said that hurt too much. Instead we wrap his whole brace in a garbage bag and plastic wrap and then have him stand in the tub and rest his leg on the edge of it while he holds the stool in there. Tyson stayed in the bathroom in case he needed help, but he was able to shower himself. Once he was done, he wrapped the towel around him and then Tyson helped him out. He was able to use his crutches and goi down the stairs with Tyson in back of him and me in the front. Such a big day!

Monday, Nov. 26th
I was glad his surgery ended up being last week so he didnt have to miss more school, plus I wouldnt of been able to go to work. He had to have someone home with him all the time that first week.  After yesterday, I wasnt as nervous going back to work and leaving him. He still needs help in and out of the chair, so I told him if he needed to goi to the bathroom to just call me and I coukd run home.  Luckily the school is flexible with me. I had to run home twice to help him and then get him lunch. Its been hard on him, but also on everyone else as well. Tomorrow is physical therapy.
