Week 6

Image
Dr said everything looks good. He can start doing 100% weight, just using 1 crutch and ditch the crutches by the end off the week. He still needs to wear the brace for another 3 to 4 weeks for support, but it has no restrictions. It can be unlocked all the time. He got to try the bike at therapy today, couldn't quite pedal all the way around, but he was able to a few times towards the end.

He has been locked at 80 degrees for bending. He gets to bump it to 90 today, but at therapy he was able to bend it without the brace at 93. They said keep it at 90 for a day or so and make sure its still easy and then he can bump it to 100. They said Monday he will get new exercises and he is almost to the point he can start doing the bike.

Week 5

The physical therapist said he could start doing 50% of his weight today. Everything looks good!

Driving

Kyler had a Christmas party for his work. We let him drive. He was super glad he went. I took a picture od the cute gift his manager gave him.

They bumped him up to 3 lbs on his leg now when he does his exercises. They also gave him a new band for the other exercises. He went from the red band to a green, which has more resistance. He is doing good!

Week 4...big day

Image
1st big day...walking with 25% of his weight. So  crazy he can start walking on it, only with about 30 lbs. She said he should only 3x a day just like gis other exercises. He steps on a scale with his leg and once he hits that weight, he shifts and puts all his weight on the good leg. He does this 20x so he can practice getting a feel for how much weight to put on it and then practices walking around 3x a day. After xmas next week he should have a better feel for it and can start walking with that same amount of weight all thru out the day. I posted pics of his leg...his stiches are scabbed and healing well.

I cant believe hes been able to do so much in such a short amount of time. They said everything looks great! He can do 2 lbs around his ankle when he does his leg raises and side raises. He only tales his brace off at therapy, but Tuesday is the big day when he can start putting a little pressure..he is super excited! His favorite part after is their ice machine.

Week 3 of therapy

Its hard to believe its been 3 weeks already, but at the same time I cant believe its only be 3 weeks. He is able to bend his knee at 60 degrees now. They put a 2 lb weight around his ankle for the side lifts, because they were getting too easy. He also has a new exercise to start doing at home. He has both legs together, with a stretchy band around both his thighs and has to lift his leg open and close. They said everything is looking good. Next Tue he can start doing 25% of his body weight.

He went out to shoot hoops today. I told him to make sure he's not putting pressure on that leg yet and not over doing it. Hes able to sit up in the recliner now and has slept in his bed the last 2 nights. At therapy, the hook this tens unit type thing on his leg that helps contract his muscle. They bump the intensity up until u can feel it. The last couple times, they have had it up high. Today she said wow didnt take much. Once u start feeling it sooner, it means ur leg muscle is starting to work mork. If they have to bump it up high before he feels it, not much of his muscle is reacting. Hes also having him do 2 sets of 20 on the leg raises instead of 2 sets of 10.

I had to meet with the administrator, school nurse, counselor and home hospice guy today. He will be coming every Wed and Fri morn for an hour to give kyler his work and help with anything he doesn't understand. They put him on home hospice until January 10th, which is the end of the quarter. If he feels ready to go back sooner he can, but for now thats the plan. His exercises are getting better and better each day. He can now sit up in the chair without having his leg elevated all the time :)

Week 2

He got his stitches out, I'll post pics later. It was bleeding a little, so i just took one before. He doesn't have to have his leg locked straight anymore, I guess only when he does the exercises. He wants him to try and bend it to 50 degrees and increase by 10 each week. In 2 weeks he can do 25% of his body weight and in 4 weeks, when we see him again, he will be at 50% of his body weight and hopefully able to bend it at 90 degrees.
